The hull identification number, or HIN, is a unique number that appears on every jet ski made in the U.S., and owners can use this number to report a stolen craft. Before you buy a used jet ski, run the HIN through an online database to determine whether someone is trying to sell you stolen goods.
Understanding Jet Ski HINs
Since 1972, federal law requires that every recreational boat manufacturer assign an HIN to each vessel built. Walking dead comics pdf free download. This includes personal watercraft. The hull identification number is unique for each boat, a kind of serial number used to keep track of the craft. In the U.S., it is a combination of letters and numbers, for a total of 12 characters. In Europe, the HIN has 14 characters. This number is embossed on a vessel above the waterline, but for personal watercraft, it is found on the aft section on a plate. In addition, many personal watercraft have 'Datatag' which carries the principle identification data.
In addition, some states require that boats be registered like cars. When you buy one, you have to register it. In Connecticut, for example, jet skis are among the watercraft that must be registered. Jet ski registration helps prevent stolen boats from being resold in the state.
- This number contains vital information about the vehicle, such as model, year of production, manufacturer, country and plant of assembly, type of engine, and more. Also if someone buy a vehicle, it is possible to check Vehicle History through VIN Number.
- As from 1981 all Kawasaki Motorcycles, Kawasaki Off-road / MX bikes and Kawasaki Quad / ATV have standarized 17- character Vehicle Identification Number ( VIN Number ). From the 4th up to the 8th position you can find the type of your Kawasaki Motorcycle, Kawasaki Off-road / MX bikes and Kawasaki Quad / ATV.
Reporting Stolen Jet Skis
Jet ski owners should write down the HIN of their watercraft and keep it somewhere outside the boat. If a jet ski is stolen, the owner should contact her harbor master and insurance company. She should also provide the HIN numbers to the local police and request that the information is given to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer.
Over 5,000 watercraft are stolen every year, with the highest incidence in Florida. Many of the thieves take watercraft with the intention of selling them.
Checking Used Jet Ski HINs
If you decide to purchase a used jet ski instead of a new one, you'll probably pay less for the watercraft. But you don't want to buy a jet ski that was stolen from someone else. You could be forced to give up the boat and also get into trouble with the law. Obviously, you can ask the seller where he got the boat, but it isn't likely that he will tell the truth if the jet ski was stolen.
If you live in a state that requires that jet skis be registered, you're in luck. You may be able to track the registration to see when your seller obtained the boat and from whom. But you'll still want to run the HIN through a database to determine whether it has been reported stolen.

Your local police may have such a database, but some do not. And even if they do, they may not open it to the public. You can find what you need without their help, because you'll find more than one database online. The first one to try is the National Marine Register. Just type in the HIN number and push 'search.'
For a complete history of the used jet ski you are looking at, you can try the HinDecoder website. It will run the HIN number through numerous state databases and provide a summary of the boat's history, including any accidents, liens and sales, and any reported theft.

Even though Mules are not road-going creatures by their nature, the utility vehicles still have Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) stamped on their chassis by their Kawasaki makers. Instead of trying to figure out whether the vehicle is a Mule, or what model of Mule it is by looks alone, the quickest and easiest way is to find the VIN and use a VIN decoder to decipher it.
Step 1
Find the VIN on the vehicle. You can locate the VIN for a Kawasaki Mule on the frame. It may be on a plate welded to the frame near the front of the vehicle, or stamped on the frame just under the seat. Clean off the VIN to avoid a mistaken reading of the characters. If the digits are worn, make a rubbing with pencil and paper to lift the characters.
Step 2
Ensure the code you are looking at is a 17-digit code, if the vehicle appears to have been made after 1981. For older vehicles, the VIN code could be shorter.
Step 3
Check the beginning of the code. Kawasaki product VINs begin with 'JK,' 'JS' or 'LM.' The first digit refers to the country of manufacture ('J' for Japan, for example) and the second character to the manufacturer ('K' for Kawasaki proper). If your vehicle does not have any of these codes, it may have been made prior to 1981 or it is not a Kawasaki.
Step 4
Kawasaki Serial Number Lookup By Address
Find out the year the vehicle was manufactured by looking at the 10th character of the VIN. This character represents the year of manufacture for vehicles made after 1980. The code begins with an 'A' representing 1980 and runs alphabetically until 2000, when the letter is 'Y.' Vehicles manufactured in 2001 carry the digit '1,' and the sequence continues until 2009 when the digit '9' is reached. For 2010 onwards, the alphabetical system resumes. (The letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, and U, Z and zero are never used in the year section.) Once you know the vehicle year and that is a Kawasaki, you may be able to identify the model by comparing it to other models of that year.
Enter the entire VIN code into a Kawasaki VIN decoder such as the one on the Motoverse website (see Resources). The free decoder will provide you with a breakdown of the information on the VIN. The rest of the code contains details of the vehicle engine and style, assembly factory and production sequence number, along with a check digit to prevent vehicle fraud.
